Chaitra Navratri 2026 Day 1: Maa Shailaputri Puja Vidhi, Vrat and Significance

Day 1 sets the absolute foundation for the entire 9 days, making the first morning the most important moment of the festival. Without the proper invocation, the rituals of the next eight days lack their firm grounding energy. On Thursday, March 19, 2026, Chaitra Navratri begins with the worship of Maa Shailaputri, the ultimate embodiment of Mother Nature.

The Form of the Day: Maa Shailaputri

Maa Shailaputri is known as the "Daughter of the Mountains". She rides her faithful bull, Nandi, holding a Trishul (trident) in one hand to destroy negativity and a lotus in the other to offer peace. She brings pure stability and determination into your life.

If you are wondering what to wear, the most auspicious colors for Day 1 are Red or Yellow, symbolizing vital energy and pure joy.

Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana) is the core ritual of Day 1. It is best performed during the morning Shubh Muhurat (approximately 06:52 AM to 10:10 AM this year). However, you should always track the daily sunrise to sync your routine for exact local timings before placing the Kalash.

  1. Prepare the space: Place a wooden plank facing North or East, and cover it with a pure red or yellow cloth.
  2. Sow the seeds: Spread soil in a shallow earthen pot and sow Saptadhanya (seven grains, mainly barley) to invite financial growth and prosperity.
  3. Establish the Kalash: Fill a copper or earthen pot with pure water or Ganga Jal. Drop a Coin, a Betel Nut and Akshat (unbroken rice) inside it.
  4. Add the leaves: Arrange five mango leaves around the rim and place a coconut on top. Tie a sacred red thread around the neck of the Kalash.
  5. Begin the worship: Light the Akhand Jyoti (eternal lamp) that should burn for all nine days. Offer fresh jasmine flowers to Maa Shailaputri.

But before you perform the aarti, the Bhog (food offering) is what seals the Goddess’s blessing.

Vrat Vidhi & Bhog

Fasting on Day 1 cleanses your physical body and clears your mind. While following the fast, eat simple root vegetables, nuts and fresh fruits.

The specific and most auspicious offering for Maa Shailaputri is Pure Desi Ghee. Offering pure cow ghee at the foot of the Goddess is believed to bless the devotee with a disease - free life and immense physical strength.

Mantra & Aarti

While offering the ghee and jasmine flowers, quiet your mind and chant her powerful primary mantra 108 times:

“Om Devi Shailaputryai Namah”
(Meaning: I bow to the Divine Goddess Shailaputri)

Spiritual Significance: The Root Chakra

Beyond the temple rituals, worshipping Maa Shailaputri brings deep psychological groundedness. In yogic science, she governs the Muladhara (Root) Chakra located at the base of the spine. When you focus on her during your prayers, you are effectively treating your root chakra for mental stability. She gives you the core strength to face the tough challenges of modern life without shaking.

The Ancient Tale

Why is her grounded energy so legendary? Her story begins with intense fire. In her past life, she was Sati, who self-immolated in the yogic fire to protect her dignity against the arrogance of her father, Daksha. Her fiery sacrifice shocked the universe.

Because of her immense devotion to Shiva, she was reborn to King Himavan, the lord of the Himalayas. She became Parvati, also known as Shailaputri (Daughter of the Mountain). This rebirth, from the chaotic flames of destruction to the solid, unshakeable nature of a mountain, represents the ultimate human journey from emotional turmoil to absolute, unbreakable stability.
