The fourth day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Kushmanda, the fourth Visible form of Goddess Durga. She is known as the creator of the universe and is believed to have brought light into the cosmic darkness with her divine smile.
Devotees worship Maa Kushmanda on this day to seek blessings for health, wealth, strength, and prosperity.
In ancient times, when there was nothing but darkness spread across the universe, no creation existed—no earth, no sky, no gods, and no living beings. The entire cosmos was void and lifeless.
At that time, the divine form of Maa Kushmanda appeared.
It is believed that with her gentle and radiant smile (Kushmanda = “Ku” small, “Ushma” energy, “Anda” cosmic egg), she created the entire universe. From that cosmic smile emerged the first light, which gave birth to the sun, planets, and all living beings.
Maa Kushmanda then established herself at the center of the Sun, becoming the source of all energy and life in the universe. Her divine energy sustains the functioning of the cosmos.
She is portrayed as having eight arms (Ashtabhuja), holding:
- Kamandal (water pot)
- Bow and arrow
- Lotus
- Amrit Kalash (nectar pot)
- Chakra (discus)
- Gada (mace)
- Jap mala (rosary)
- And a pot of divine energy
Mantra: "Om Devi Kushmandayai Namah" (ॐ देवी कूष्माण्डायै नमः).
